LED mask: how many sessions a week, and for how long?
Share
It is the question we are asked most often, and most of the answers found online are vague. Here is ours, and what it is based on.
The short answer
20 minutes per session, 4 to 5 evenings a week, for 4 weeks. Then 2 to 3 sessions a week for maintenance.
This is the rhythm we recommend for a course: regular, and sustainable over four weeks. It is not the protocol of the studies, and we would rather say so: on the face, the study was run every evening for 3 weeks, with the mask combined with a cream. A study protocol is there to measure, not to build your routine.
Our devices also offer other programmes, which stop on their own: 10 minutes for the amber and green modes of the face mask; on the neck collar, three programmes of 15, 20 or 25 minutes, after which the device switches off automatically. Both studies were run with 20-minute sessions.
Why consistency matters more than duration
Photobiomodulation is not an instant-effect treatment. It works as a course: each session brings a dose of energy to the skin, and it is the repetition of these doses, at close intervals, that helps the skin over time.
The consequence is counter-intuitive but clear: four 20-minute sessions during the week are better than one session of an hour and twenty minutes on Sunday. The total time is the same, but the light was studied in close, 20-minute sessions, not in catch-up sessions.
This is also why a very dense mask used once a month will help little, while a properly dosed mask, used four to five evenings a week, has time to help the skin. Consistency is the one parameter entirely in your hands, and it is the most decisive.
What the measurements show, week by week
On the face, the study run by a third-party laboratory, with the mask combined with a cream, measured progress at regular intervals:
- 2 weeks: +6.5% skin density, and +24.2% hydration
- 3 weeks: +13.6% skin density
Two things to take from this curve. First: something can be measured from the second week, which is quick. Second: the gain between the second and third weeks is greater than what was achieved in the first two. Stopping at two weeks means stopping before the week in which the study measured the most progress.
These measurements describe the study protocol, not your routine: at home, the session comes first and your skincare comes right after. They show a trend, and results vary with skin type and regular use.
It is the most costly mistake you can make with an LED mask: giving up halfway through the first course.
Should you use it every day?
You can. The devices emit no UV, no blue light and no heat. If you have a skin condition, ask a doctor before use.
The face study was in fact run every evening for 3 weeks. But we will not go as far as telling you that daily use gives more: the study did not compare different rhythms. We recommend 4 to 5 evenings a week, a rhythm you can keep up over four weeks. Four evenings kept are worth more than seven promised and three done.
What time of day
In the evening, before bed: this is also the manufacturer's recommendation. With no UV and no blue light, the session fits into an evening routine.
The order matters: the session always comes first.
- Clean, dry skin, with no cosmetic product on it. Keep exfoliating actives (AHA, BHA, retinol) for another evening.
- A 20-minute session. There is nothing to hold: the strap keeps the mask in place on its own and the programme stops on its own. You can lie down, read or listen.
- Your skincare right after, serum then cream.
How long before you see anything
Allow a first four-week course before judging. Instrumental measurements detect changes earlier than the eye can, and results vary with skin type and regular use.
The most useful thing you can do: photograph your face at the same time of day, in the same light, at the start and at the end of the course. Day-to-day progress is invisible when you look at yourself every day.
In summary
- Frequency: 4 to 5 evenings a week
- Session length: 20 minutes
- Course length: 4 weeks
- Maintenance: 2 to 3 sessions a week
- Order: clean, dry skin, the session, then your skincare
- When: in the evening
